Floating World
Kabuki theater was very popular in red-light districts located in Edo Japan. In these Plays, the “floating world” was conveyed on stage and gave the viewers an escape from their everyday life (The Floating World). These day long performances provided continuous pleasure and ease to many of the audience members watching the show. Not caring about the numerous tasks surrounding oneself, refusing to be unhappy and going with the flow is the real definition of floating world, and by watching kabuki theater, one could achieve that (What Life was Like). Though these pleasures were mainly for the rich, the commoners had second hand experiences of the floating world through gossip, stories, song, and pictures (An Introduction to Kabuki Theater).
